I always find the "death by crucifixion" from the Romans extremely heinous. Crucifixion wasn't invented by the Romans, it came eariler from Persia. Apparently it's origin came from the fact that the earth was considered sacred to Ormuzd the god and thus the criminal was lifted up off it, so he would not defile the earth. Which they considered the gods property.

The scourging that came first was just horrific. Many times the scourging was so intense, the condemned couldn't even stay conscious.

We always see the cross and remember Jesus. We now commonly have them all over our home, some of our crosses beautifully decorated and ornate! But it really dilutes what REALLY happened to him and the extreme suffering He endured. It is said that it was so gruesome that if a crucifixion was done in modern day, it would be rated R or above to watch in real life. I mentally never connect when seeing the cross just HOW bad it was. Yes, I try to focus on the resurrection and the joy of it all! But it is so important to see that cross and really understand the earth shattering reality of gruesome suffering he took on for us and how many turned their backs on him during it! It is so sad to ponder on.
